It’s not easy to come up with a fresh color palette for winter, when it seems like everything in stores turns to the same mix of burgundy, charcoal, and camel. When I started thinking about cornerstone pieces for winter, I knew I had to avoid the style rut I fell into last year – a repetition of black tights, black pencil skirts, and grey crewneck sweaters. (I became particularly bored with tights – possibly because I wore them with denim shorts almost every day for a year in grad school, as an easy uniform to throw on before biking to class in Savannah).
Each season, I try to “shop my closet” before buying anything new. I ask myself:
What pieces from past seasons can I combine in unexpected ways?
What old favorites have I not worn in a long time?
And lastly:
Are there any on-trend pieces that it makes sense to buy because I’ll wear them next year and the year after that?
In response, I came up with this look that combines answers to all of the above. The forest green v-neck sweater is cashmere from Everlane, a thick fuzzy knit that is luxuriously warm. I bought it on eBay two years ago, and I do wonder if it’s a men’s sweater. The fit is loose and comfortable, but still works tucked into these cropped Theory pants – also found on eBay.
The pants are a thick, quality ponte knit that doesn’t feel seasonally out of place in colder weather, and the pale blush / nude color felt fresh and unexpected paired with the deep forest green.
To round out the look, I styled the pieces with silver D’Orsay pumps from J. Crew (purchased with my employee discount when I worked at the Harbor East store four years ago) and sterling silver drop earrings that once belonged to my grandmother.
And the one trend item – of course – is this plaid tailored coat from River Island. I saw Blair Eadie’s shoot with this coat on her blog Atlantic // Pacific back in the fall and fell completely in love. Though it’s sold as a wool blend, it’s only 3% wool, and 97% acrylic/viscose/poly so it’s not very warm. However, it’s well lined, the weave looks and feels high quality, and I have not noticed any pilling after two months of daily wear. All my other coats are solid colors, so I felt this classic black and white pattern was a solid investment.
With bare ankles, this is a look for warmer winter days – but I’m definitely on the hunt for a pair of full-length blush pants so I can keep wearing this palette through December and into the new year.
