This season I’m in love with two trends that are super hot right now – white leather booties and satin slip skirts. But I’m usually pretty adamant that I’m not a trend follower. Well, I believe it’s possible to balance being trendy and classic when you know what truly suits your style.
“Trendy” is such a loaded word – the connotation is instantly something both super-cool yet ephemeral; “trendy” seems to be the antithesis of “classic.” My style philosophy is nine-tenths shopping for longevity – elegant, quality pieces that fit beautifully, suit me to a T, and will last me at least a decade or more (like my Stuart Weitzman booties with a block heel that I’ve had since 2007 and get re-heeled every year). That said, you have to allow yourself room to have fun with fashion too!
I usually try to balance the two by seeking out pieces that feel au courant yet will never really feel dated or passé. This fall, I shopped my closet for two on-trend pieces – a satin slip skirt in dusky rose (really a slinky dress/nightgown from Fleur du Mal) and a cropped wool sweater from Aritzia with just a little volume in the sleeves.

My trendy splurge of the season was a pair of stiletto-heel white leather booties from Schutz – the classic silhouette and super comfortable fit mean I’ll be able to wear them for years to come, but the white boot itself is super hot this year. It’s a nod to the mod white boots of the 60s, and adds a little light to the traditionally deeper autumnal color palette.

Another way to tackle the conundrum of trendiness is by combining classic pieces in unexpected ways, which this sweater-and-satin-skirt combo achieves. I love how a cropped neutral sweater can be totally classic when paired with jeans or a black pencil skirt, but layering one over a dress creates a completely fresh look.

Pulled all together, these pieces create a look that’s on-trend, yet totally classic. I accessorized with my favorite DVF Bonne Soirée Bag (which I can’t get enough of – it’s just the right size, has an elegantly structured shape, and the pop of yellow on the sides makes me smile!).
I’m a jewelry minimalist, but right now I can’t get enough of these delicate gold vermeil rings with semi-precious stones from locally-owned online boutique Mint + Major. They immediately caught my eye at a recent pop-up because I could tell the stones were real, and I love the asymmetric placement.
If you’re in the Baltimore area, come to the Small Business Saturday brunch event I’m hosting with Mint + Major, Shop Arrow Clothing, and Thurman and Fig on Nov. 24 at The Charles in Fed Hill – there will be flower crowns, brunch bites, mimosa specials, a DJ, and lots of gifts for all the best gals in your life!
