From demure high necklines to Pepto-Bismol pink, there’s a lot being reinvented in fashion, if the New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 runways are anything to go by. Here’s my roundup of the six fall trends I’m most excited for this year.

High Necklines

From sculptural to knotted, the high neckline is having a moment. I loved Taoray Wang’s delicate, architectural pleats with a ruff-like quality shared by the liquid column dresses at YUFASH. Meanwhile, Son Jung Wang created an almost-bow on her intricately draped satin gown. Vionnet would be proud.

Dramatic Black & White

A classic duo reinvented for a new decade, black and white was all over the runways in dramatic fashion. I could definitely see myself wearing Rene’ Tyler’s sequin dress with feathered shoulders, while Matt Sarafa went even bolder, pairing his feathered column skirt with elbow-length gloves in an oversized black and white houndstooth print. Chiara Boni drew from mid-century classics with a matching cape and hat that would feel just right on Audrey Hepburn.

Asymmetric Leather Belts

Casual, tough, and extremely versatile, asymmetric leather cinchers popped up everywhere. Whether artfully wrapped around itself at Rebecca Minkoff or worn loose at Taoray Wang, there’s a version of this belt for any look. I especially liked Manishii’s smooth leather version which begs to be fastened over a flowing silk maxi dress to transition it into fall.

Pepto-Bismol Pink

A tricky shade that’s often avoided, Pepto-Bismol pink popped up in the most unexpected places at NYFW. From a triple-peplum dress at Chiara Boni, to a matching sweater-and-fedora set at JUST IN XX, your little sister’s Barbie-esque shade is all grown up. I especially loved the sleek shorts suit at Rebecca Minkoff, styled with a tonal mini bag (these could warrant a fall trends post all their own) and sharp sunglasses.

Voluminous Sleeves

The volume trend continues with sleeves of all shapes as long as the size is big, bigger, biggest. I especially loved Son Jung Wan’s pleated lantern sleeves and Chiara Boni’s chic cut-outs (who knew the bicep could be so sexy all on its own?). With a nod to the Victorian, what could have been a fleeting trend two years ago feels like it’s here to stay.

Wide-Leg Pantsuits

On the street and on the runways, pant suits have been having a big moment too, emblematic of modern women’s power dressing. (It helps that they’re also a timeless silhouette that Katharine Hepburn made her signature style). Right now they feel fresh in monochromatic interpretations, without anything – or barely anything – worn underneath, à la Ruth Zabetta.

Ah I love all of these! Black and white will always be a timeless classic but I love how it was updated.

There were a lot of bold interpretations on the runway – I think large-scale black and white prints and details are going to be big! (Those feather shoulders though!)

The high necklines are my favorite, especially now that my hair is short and off my neck!
