If you’re planning a Galentine’s Day brunch this weekend, I’ve got you covered with two delicious recipes from food blogger Molly Krebs of Spices in my DNA:

Of course, I would be remiss to not include details on a stylish (but warm) outfit to host in.

I count myself lucky to number food blogger and photographer Molly Krebs as one of my friends. Her blog turns four years old this month, and it’s so cool to see how much she has achieved in that time. Molly’s recipes focus on all-natural ingredients, unique flavor combinations, and how to elevate everyday meals and desserts to an art form.

After I launched The Primpy Sheep, we knew we had to collaborate. It didn’t take long for this shoot idea to come together. Molly developed two winter citrus recipes to perk up tired taste buds, and I put together a cozy, textural outfit to savor them in.

Blackened Salmon Tacos with Blood Orange Avocado Salsa

These easy tacos are anything but everyday with Molly’s two special touches – first, lightly blackened tortillas that create a bit of crunch (and make them look gorgeous in photos), and second, the addition of zingy blood oranges to the salsa.

This recipe only took about 20 minutes to make and is easy to scale for a large group if you’re having a bunch of girlfriends over. Bonus points if you pick up some little marble cheese trays at Target or HomeGoods and plate each person’s tacos individually. (These five are clearly all mine!)

I love how simple and healthy this dish is, and how easy it is to bring together. You could even set up a “taco station” and have your BFFs assemble their own.

Vanilla Bean Blood Orange Cake

The cornerstone of any good Galentine’s Day brunch is dessert, and this naked layer cake brings style in spades. The recipe is very straightforward as long as you plan ahead. Bake the cake layers a day in advance, and if you plan to candy your own orange slices, take care of that ahead of time too. The glaze and frosting can be made right before you assemble everything.

Including sour cream in the cake batter gives it a rich texture and depth of flavor and ensures it doesn’t crumble when you spread on the frosting.

The Look

I love mixing warm and cool neutrals, especially when each piece has a different texture – like this basket weave turtleneck in toffee, and fuzzy grey midi skirt with a front slit. The sweater is the perfect shade to go with everything – you might recognize it from last month’s post, Three Cozy Sweaters to Help You Survive Until Spring.

These earrings are by a local D.C.-based jewelry designer, Designs by SEK.

I added a pair of gold-plated earrings with geometric jasper drops to bring both neutral shades up around my face, which made the color combination look harmonious, while my favorite pair of neutral patent leather pumps from M. Gemi ensured the slouchier clothing items didn’t feel dowdy. I finished the look with two coats of dark nail polish to add depth.
