Wearing the original Lunya washable silk tank set in deep blue

There’s something truly chic about a matching pajama set – especially one that claims it will help you sleep better. Pure nonsense? No, says sleepwear brand Lunya, whose cheeky tagline, “Good in bed,” pops up everywhere on social media. You’ve probably seen this set spectacularly hyped up – on Instagram, TikTok, in your favorite fashion magazine, and more. So what’s the deal with these near-legendary pjs?

Founded in 2014, I discovered Lunya about two years ago when I was looking for a silk nightgown that doubled as a slip dress. Though they now carry cotton, cashmere, and other fabrics, I was drawn to their original line of pajamas in thermoregulating washable silk. These are crafted simply and beautifully, without any frilly bells and whistles – but at $178 for a tank top and shorts, Lunya also charges more than I’ve ever spent on pajamas – gulp. Cue deep breath while I hit the purchase button. So is Lunya’s washable silk set worth it?

About the brand

First, what’s Lunya all about? Lunya’s sleepwear and intimates, “are crafted to make you feel confidently comfortable in your most intimate space — the bedroom,” says their website. “Being a modern woman can be complicated. We’re here to simplify — we know lots of things keep you up at night; what you sleep in shouldn’t be one of them.

While I wasn’t entirely convinced a stylish pajama set would help me simplify my chaotic life, I was interested in trying the washable silk set for other reasons. First, I am the kind of OCD person who relishes a good matching PJ set and likes feeling put together at all times (even when I’m catching zzzs). Second, I love silk, but most silk pajamas are more sexy than functional. I don’t need delicate lace on my sleepwear, but I do need them to be comfy!

Is the design and construction solid?

Lunya proudly develops their own predominantly natural fabrics, something a textile nerd like me thoroughly appreciates. I was immediately impressed with the weight of the washable silk fabric – it’s thick and completely opaque, with a lovely drape that felt comfortable as I lounged around before bed and in the morning. The silk has an almost sueded finish that’s very matte with a subtle sheen in the light. The seams are solid and well-constructed with no loose threads.

How I wash and dry my Lunya washable silk set

I ran this set through the wash before I wore it for the first time, and as promised, it didn’t shrink. The first few times I washed this set I hung it up to air-dry and ironed out the wrinkles. But who has time to iron their pajamas?!

A couple years and several silk sets later, I’ve learned to just run my Lunya pieces through the dryer on gentle. I take them out after 5-10 minutes (they dry quickly!) and hang them up immediately. This way they dry wrinkle-free and I haven’t seen any negative impact to the fabric. Easy peasy!

What is thermoregulation?

One of Lunya’s biggest selling points for their silk and alpaca sets are that they’re thermoregulating – but what does that mean exactly? In simple terms, it means these materials keep your body cool when it’s hot and and warm when it’s cold. Silk is a protein fiber, with similar qualities to human skin, while alpaca fibers have microscopic air pockets which make it lighter and even more thermoregulating than wool.

Wearing the washable silk set around before bed, it felt breathable, cool to the touch, and not clingy or constricting at all. Comfort? Check.

How does the Lunya washable silk set perform?

This set is designed to wear comfortably through nighttime tossing and turning, with a back vent on the tank and side slits on the tap shorts for range of motion. As someone who changes sleep positions constantly throughout the night, I looked forward to putting these thoughtful design details to the test.

After my first week of wearing this set I did find that I was sleeping more comfortably temperature-wise and not half-waking up when my 20 lb. terrier moves around the bed. I was actually surprised (and delighted) at the incremental improvement. I’ve slept in silk nightgowns before and hadn’t had the same positive experience, which I attribute to this set’s vented design as much as the silk.

The back vent is especially critical. It stays closed when you’re up and walking around, but for someone like me to rolls over multiple times at night, I think it helps with my range of motion so I’m not waking up a little bit just to roll over.

Is that revolutionary? Maybe not. But did I feel extra cute – and a little more comfortable at night? Absolutely.

Is the washable silk set worth it?

I am definitely enjoying the incremental sleep improvements, and I love feeling chic, even while sitting in bed reading. The set certainly feels luxurious – but is it worth almost $200? And some of the other washable silk pieces run even higher!

I say yes – if it fits into your budget and if you’re specifically looking to treat yourself to some really fine sleepwear. Two years in, these pieces still look like knew, and I’ve gone on to buy other washable silk styles as well. They’re all extremely functional, well-made, and well-designed.

Their washable silk sets also makes for excellent gifts, because it’s exactly the kind of luxury thing that could be a bit hard to rationalize buying for yourself! I gave my mother-in-law the Washable Silk High-Rise Pant Set in this deep blue for Christmas last year and she loved it. Or as my father-in-law said about her when she tried it on—“It makes you look like Zsa Zsa Gabor!”

Final verdict: Yes, I would buy this set again, and two years onward I’ve tried a bunch of other pieces from Lunya’s washable silk line! Read all my Lunya reviews here.
