Ever since I took the Senreve Mini Maestra to Spain with me last summer, I’ve been interested in trying the larger sizes this elegant bag style comes in. For the past three years I’ve loyally used my Lo & Sons Seville tote for work (read my review here), but I thought it might be time for a change. I love the sleek design and versatility of Senreve’s Maestra line (with the ability to switch between a satchel, crossbody, and backpack), so I gave their largest bag, the Maestra a try.

The Maestra is marketed as a sophisticated work bag for the modern woman on the go – she might take public transportation to work and then walk a few blocks to happy hour, needing a work bag that transitions from a hands-free backpack to an in-hand fashion statement.

About the brand

Senreve’s founders started the brand when they found themselves in search of the perfect luxury handbag. As young professionals, they were looking for a bag that was beautiful and stylish, but also versatile enough to keep up with their everyday lives. Since most designer bags focus on form over function, they decided to take matters into their own hands.

Senreve’s bags are designed to empower women to go about their busy lives with ease, knowing their bag will transition effortlessly to anything the day (or night) brings. The ability to multitask is key here – with multiple interior and an exterior pocket, the Maestra line aims to put everything you need effortlessly within your grasp.

How big is the Senreve Maestra?

Senreve’s main bag style is the Maestra, a versatile crossbody-satchel-backpack that comes in three sizes:

  • The Maestra, 10.25″ tall, 6.75″ deep, and 12.25″ wide at the base, it’s as big as a work tote and has an interior sleeve that fits up to a 13” laptop.
  • The Midi Maestra, 8.75″ tall, 5.75″ deep, and 10.5″ wide at the base, this is a perfect medium size for day or night use; it fits more than you would expect.
  • The Mini Maestra, 7.5″ tall, 5.5″ deep, and 8.5″ wide at the base. A perfect satchel bag size, this fits phone, small wallet, lipstick, compact, sunglasses, and even a DSLR camera.

The Maestra is the largest bag in Senreve’s collection; it says it fits a 13” laptop in the interior sleeve, or a 15” laptop in the center compartment. I tested this out and while my husband’s Microsoft Surface did fit perfectly in the interior sleeve with room in the bag to spare, my 15” Macbook took up the entire center space, pulling it taut so that nothing else really fit – an important thing to note if you travel with a larger laptop.

With the Microsoft Surface in the sleeve, I was able to fit a ton in the center compartment – a water bottle, makeup bag, change of shoes, and more. If I didn’t use a 15” laptop for work, this would be an ideal work bag for me.

Construction

All Senreve’s bags are made from 100% genuine full-grain Italian leather. I ended up purchasing the Senreve Maestra in pebbled black, a classic color and finish that’s guaranteed to go with everything.

I love that Senreve’s bags are structured enough to stand up on their own (they have metal protective feet too, which are so essential). They feel extremely sturdy and durable, and the finish is scratch- and water-resistant. No need to worry about babying this designer bag.

On the inside, Senreve lines its bags with a top quality micro-suede lining that feels luxurious and protects whatever you stash inside from bumps and scratches.

How useful is the Maestra?

After using it a few times, I was very happy with my choice – this is definitely a bag that looks super high-end and has a lot of really positive qualities. But does it really perform better than a work tote?

I would say it depends on your lifestyle. If I walked or biked to work, or was hopping on the subway or a public bus every day, the Maestra’s versatility would totally be worth it – it’s so unique to find a high-end bag that you can also sling over your shoulders as a backpack. Alas, I have a simple drive into the office, so I don’t really need my work bag to do anything more than get thrown over my shoulder.

While I absolutely love the Mini and Midi Maestra bags for nights and weekends (the ability to take my DSLR camera everywhere is a big priority), in the end I went back to my Lo & Sons Seville tote for every day work use. That said, if Senreve came out with a Maestra that fit my 15” laptop in the sleeve, I would consider switching on aesthetics alone.
