If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that 1) I love everything silk, and 2) I’m completely enamored with Lunya’s washable silk and silk-cotton sleepwear. I have quite a few styles (check out my library of reviews here), but as soon as the Lunya silk racer dress launched, I knew I had to have it.

With a high-neckline, maxi length, and alluring front slit, this dress is just at home on the beach as it would be on the red carpet with a pair of stilettos. This was a big selling point for me because I love pieces that are multi-purpose, so as soon as they offered the style in their bright, fun, energizing pink shade, I jumped on it. Read on to see how it measured up.

Why silk?

First, why spend more on a silk nightgown, when there are cheaper synthetic options? Silk is a protein fiber, with similar qualities to human skin, that keeps your body cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold. In addition to being thermoregulating and breathable (unlike most synthetics), it also has a beautiful hand-feel and luster. Lunya has perfected this fabric with their thick, opaque, machine-washable fabric that comes in a wide range of sleepwear styles, from a tank set, to a tee set, to a robe (click through links for my separate reviews of each one).

The racer dress fit

The Lunya silk racer dress has an easy, A-line silhouette with no zippers or buttons. It slips easily over the head (tip: use the elastic at the back of the collar for a little extra give), with comfortable armholes. After reading reviews on the Lunya website and seeing the fit on their 5’11” models, I was a little worried the hem might drag on the ground, but the length was perfect on me at 5’5” – just an inch or so above the ground. If you’re shorter than I am the length will be an issue, but it would be easy to have a tailor take in the hem.

I’m quite small in the bust so the fit is very loose across the chest, but it fits with the overall easy, unstructured shape of the dress. For reference, I usually wear a size 0, and I’m pictured here wearing the silk racer dress in size XS.

The details

Hands-down the best part of this dress . . . is that it has pockets! They’re located in a good place at the lower hips too, so they don’t make you look bulky. I really appreciate this because I hate when I slip my phone into pockets that are sewn in an awkward spot and it looks lumpy.

Another beautiful detail is the triangular cutout at the back. This vent is really cooling at night, and really sexy during the day or if you wear the dress out and about. As I mentioned earlier, the neckline at the back is elastic, which makes the dress easy to slip on and off over your head, even with the high neckline.

I also love that there’s a partial lining made from the same washable silk fabric throughout the front top half of the dress. This makes it a little more modest when you’re wearing it without a bra, and gives it a solid drape (as opposed to a traditional, flimsy nightgown), making it feel appropriate to wear out in public too.

The verdict

This dress is definitely a win in my book! I do feel like I could wear this – if not to a dinner party – at least out to brunch or a beach wedding. It’s high-quality silk with a sueded finish that shows slightly different color undertones in different light. I did ask ping Lunya on Instagram to ask if energized pink was any different from last year’s hot peachy-pink Stellar, and they said it was – but IMHQO it’s the same color. (I bought a different set in Stellar last June and returned it, but I’m pretty sure they’re the same color).

As sleepwear, the dress is super comfortable and luxurious, as is everything I’ve tried from Lunya’s washable silk sleepwear line. Though the silk tee set is still the style I want to collect in every color, I’m glad I picked up the racer dress in this fun pink shade. It’s a truly unique piece!
