Why Everlane’s Alpaca Sweaters Are My Fall/Winter Obsession

It’s not often I find a piece of clothing that I like enough to buy in four different colors – but the Everlane Oversized Alpaca Crew hooked me from the start. This super soft alpaca sweater is continuously selling out, so when Everlane launched its fall colors last month, I was quick to snap them up in camel, spruce, charcoal, and almond. Here’s why this sweater should be a wardrobe staple in your closet too – this season and for years to come.

Styling the Everlane Oversized Alpaca Crew sweater.

The fit

The first thing that drew me to this sweater is the easy, louche fit. The Oversized Alpaca Crew, per its name, has an oversized silhouette that looks effortlessly chic. While some reviewers have suggested sizing down, I found that my normal Everlane XS size was perfect to get the sweater to fit as intended. I did originally try it in an XXS, but it didn’t have the right drape and fit that’s depicted by the Everlane models, so I ultimately sized up.

Untucked, the sweater hits just below the hips, but it’s lightweight enough that it’s easy to tuck into pants, while the sleeves have just enough dimension to be interesting. There’s nothing super trendy about this sweater – and that’s kind of the best thing about it. It’s an instant classic but it’s not boring, so it perfectly complements whatever quiet or loud pieces you want to style it with.

The fiber

Second, this sweater is super soft and easy to care for. Crafted in a 58% alpaca, 34% recycled nylon, and 8% merino wool knit, the Oversized Alpaca Crew is cozy and airy at the same time. Unlike your thick wooly winter sweaters, this piece is lighter and much more breathable. Layer a t-shirt underneath on chillier days, or wear the sweater by itself while the weather yo-yos between 60-70 degrees.

I wash my alpaca sweaters by hand with Woolite, gently squeeze out excess moisture by rolling each one up in a towel, and then lay them flat to dry on a clothes rack. While I’ve found that these sweaters don’t pill easily (hurrah!) they do need a little TLC to preserve the lovely loose weave. Treating them gently isn’t time consuming, but will ensure these sweaters maintain a plush texture and look great for a long, long time.

A fun fact I learned from Everlane is that alpacas are soft-hooved gentle grazers, which means that they’re easier on pastures than other herd animals. I’ve always appreciated Everlane’s commitment to transparency in their manufacturing process, so it’s nice to know that the company also takes extra precautions to ensure humane treatment of the animals they source fibers from.

The shades

Finally, I love love love the colors Everlane has picked for their alpaca sweaters this year. The warm taupe is a beautiful neutral camel that doesn’t read too yellow, spruce is a cool-toned deep green that’s going to be perfect for the holiday season, and the charcoal and almond are classic dark and light greys that will go with everything.

To sum up, I know I’m going to get a ton of wear out of the Everlane Oversized Alpaca Crew sweaters, so I have no regrets at all about getting them in four colors! These are going to serve me just as well for work as they will on the weekends, and will keep me warm throughout the fall and winter.
