As two working professionals, it can be hard to set aside dedicated “us” time. Whether we’re home or at one of our favorite restaurants, it’s too easy for the background noise from work, friends, family, and other obligations to create various distractions.

Our best memories, and the most romantic ones, are our vacations – especially bed and breakfasts. But we don’t always have time to get away. Enter the staycation!

Checking in – the Sagamore Pendry’s Beaux-Arts facade.

Wherever we travel, Reed and I relish the boutique luxury hotel experience. So it was easy for us to pick the Sagamore Pendry as our staycation destination. With thoughtful interior design, unique art, and a beautiful location right on the Baltimore harbor in Fells Point, the Pendry checked all our boxes for an elegant modern treat.

About the Pendry

The hotel occupies a restored 1914 port warehouse, reimagined with warm wood and dark metal, an homage to Baltimore’s industrial history. Designed by Baltimore interior designer Patrick Sutton, the hotel’s art collection is a love letter to Charm City, and made us feel almost like we were in an art museum as much as a hotel. That kind of unique artistic detail truly creates a sense of place.

You won’t want to miss these pieces of art around the hotel:

  • Adam Scott Cook’s undulating steel Rituals sculpture in front of hotel that recalls gentle waves from the harbor
  • MICA-grad Chul Hyun Ahn’s mesmerizing piece of light work in the hotel’s entryway
  • Street artist Gaia’s painting of Francis Scott Key in the hotel lobby
  • The 12-foot Botero Horse sculpture in the hotel’s open-air courtyard.

Hotel Room & Amenities

From the moment we valeted our car to the check-in experience, the Pendry’s impeccable service punctuated its high-end atmosphere. As soon as we stepped into our Superior Harbor King, we were taken with the beautiful water view, and the elegant wood, marble, brass, and leather furnishings. The floor-to-ceiling-windows were the perfect frame for the harbor.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and a waterfront view.

After dropping off luggage in our room and freshening up, we picked up drinks from the hotel bar (chic and perfectly positioned to people-watch) and sauntered down to the Pendry’s pool. The only true waterfront pool in Baltimore, it was the perfect place to kick off our staycation, enjoying golden hour and a glass of prosecco.

For dinner, we made reservations at the Pendry’s Rec Pier Chophouse – a traditional Italian chophouse with high ceilings and expansive leather booths for guests to dine in style.

I ordered a beet and citrus salad (smoky, spicy, and delicious) and pasta dish, while Reed opted for the 28-day aged filet that was melt-in-your-mouth tender. We capped off the evening with decaf espresso and traditional Italian bombolinis – amazing cream-filled doughnuts – that sealed our night on a sweet note.

By 10pm, we were snug in our luxurious king-size bed, replete with good food and drink, feeling like we really had escaped somewhere far away.

Breakfast in Bed

The most luxurious part of our stay came the next morning, when we decided to eschew the human interaction of a public meal, and order room service instead. There’s nothing like a blood orange mimosa, tender lemon-ricotta pancakes, and crumbs you don’t have to clean up yourself to make you feel supremely pampered.

With a late check-out, and Sunday morning sunshine bouncing off the harbor and streaming through our window, our staycation at the Sagamore Pendry truly felt like an escape – even though we were only 10 minutes away from home!

A mimosa and pancakes capped off our city escape.
